History

Today’s plant was established in 1930 as a monastery operation for wood waste processing as a response to the wind storm in 1929, which caused an extensive damage to the monastery forests. Soon the plant was sold and, under the name “Holzfaserplattenwerk Braunau”, abbreviated as HOBRA, started producing fiberboard; in Bohemia, the board material was named HOBRA for a long time, as derived from the German name of the works. The interesting thing is that this designation has been entered in the Czech Standard Language Dictionary, where, under the title HOBRA, one can find a fiberboard description. HOBRA was used predominantly in civil engineering and has been known by many as material for notice boards. This line was abandoned later and the plant started producing filtersheets (1950) and insulation materials (1965) using the recently installed paper-processing technology, both products being based on asbestos at that time. Since 1985, the production has been asbestos-free. In filtersheets, asbestos was replaced by high-quality diatomaceous earth and perlite, and in insulation boards by mineral and ceramic fibers. After the long period of many restrictions after World War II, Rudolf and Jan Školníks returned to the plant its original name of HOBRA.
